1921 Reuben Mattus’ family begins selling fruit ice pops in New York City.
     
1961 Reuben Mattus develops the world’s first super-premium ice cream – Häagen-Dazs® - free of stabilizers, preservatives, artificial flavors, colorings or additives. Chocolate, coffee and vanilla flavors are sold in New York City gourmet shops.
     
1960s Sales grow steadily. New flavors are introduced, including strawberry, which is brought to market after a six-year search for the perfect fruit.
     
1970s The first Häagen-Dazs Shop opens in New York City (1976).
     
1980s Japanese consumers line up for blocks to get their first taste of Häagen-Dazs ice cream, which arrives via a joint venture at Häagen-Dazs Shops and retail locations (1984).
  Häagen-Dazs launches an ice cream bar for adult tastes on Valentine’s Day Eve (1986). Sorbet is also introduced.
  The first European Häagen-Dazs Shops open in the United Kingdom and Germany (1987).
     
1990s Häagen-Dazs modernizes a gift-giving tradition with the launch of ice cream mooncakes in Hong Kong (1992).
  China welcomes its first Häagen-Dazs Shop (Shanghai, 1996).
  Two popular products – ice cream and tea – are paired together with the launch of Häagen-Dazs Green Tea ice cream in Japan (1996).
  The ice cream world falls for Häagen-Dazs Dulce de Leche, an Argentine taste treat (1998).
     
2000s An ice cream sandwich for adult tastes – Häagen-Dazs Cream Crisp™ – launches in Japan (2001), followed by the introduction of Häagen-Dazs Cream Crisp™ in Europe (2004).
  A new flagship shop opens on the Champs-Élysées in Paris (2007).
  In Japan, Häagen-Dazs unveils Dolce® – a multi-layered sensation inspired by desserts of the world. It’s the most successful introduction in the brand’s history (2007).
  Brazil hosts Häagen-Dazs Mix Music™ festival (2007).
  Häagen-Dazs launches in India and Morocco (2008).
  Häagen-Dazs Smoothies debut in Europe (2009).
  Häagen-Dazs ranks as the No. 1 Most-Liked Brand in the Nikkei Brand Japan 2009 survey of the top 1,000 brands in Japan (2009).
